Matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors to treat diabetic foot ulcers
SalvePed is developing ND-336 for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. ND-336 will selectively deactivate the detrimental effect of a protein called MMP-9, which is involved in the breakdown of tissue and is a contributor to chronic wounds. ND-336, inhibits the breakdown of tissue so the wound can heal.
Diabetic foot ulcers are notoriously difficult to heal, often resulting in lower-limb amputations. The wounds do not heal properly because of a protein that results in prolonged inflammation, and current treatments do not address this root problem.
